Website Navigation and Menu Structure

Website NavigationThis document is not about design but it is worth mentioning that ease of navigation is very important on a website. Your visitors must be able to find what they are looking for without having to think too much about it. If you are selling something or offering a service make sure that it is obvious and feature it prominently.

Bear in mind that while traffic and SEO is important if you get 100 visitors a day and you can convert 10 of them this is better than having 1000 visitors a day and converting just five.

Ensure that all of your menu options and website navigation are quite clear. We have used a standard format for this website and hopefully you are finding it quite easy to find your way around. The horizontal menu at the top of the page links to the standard pages that you can find on most websites, homepage, contact, about us, etc.

The menu on the right hand column has been split into sections with a clear description of each of the pages that are featured. The menus are common to all of the pages. This makes it more intuitive when you are searching for the information in here.

Helping the Search Engines to Navigate your Website

When the search engine robots visit your website they need to be able to find all of the pages and all of the information on each page. If there are any problems with this they may not be able to find some of the information that you hope to feature. If they fail to find it then it won't be indexed and you will receive no traffic for this.

There are several things that you can do to ensure that Google can fully index and navigate your website and that it can find all of your content. The best way of making this happen is to use the tools that Google has made available for free in Webmaster Tools.
